Every day, week, month that passes to Covid-19 surprises us with some symptom that in many cases are still difficult to identify. Until then we knew about symptoms such as cough, fever, fatigue, sore throat, nasal obstruction, headache, shortness of breath, diarrhea and vomiting. Ocular symptoms have been reported over time as dry eye, foreign body sensation, itchy eyes, visual blurring, conjunctivitis, chemosis and photophobia. Now after the recent studies know what the new eye symptoms are in patients.

RECENT STUDIES:

The study presented in January of that year in the Journal of Ophthalmic & Vision Research, showed that approximately one in ten patients with Covid-19 included in the study had at least one ocular manifestation. Among them, the following were highlighted: dry eye and foreign body sensation (16%), ocular hyperemia (13.3%), eye pain (9.6%), secretion (8.8%). The most prevalent eye disease was conjunctivitis (88.8%). Other rarer conditions such as keratitis (2.2%), episcleritis (2.2%), keratoconjunctivitis (2.2%), hordeolus (2.2%), pingueculitis (1.1%), posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (1.1%) also have been reported.

DRY EYE

It is already known that the manifestations are not frequent, but that they serve as a warning to remain under observation. Dry eye, for example, may be more frequent, not because of the disease itself, but because of the constant use of masks, and therefore, in people already with symptoms, it can aggravate the condition.

ALERT YOUR PATIENT AND ALSO TAKE CARE!

While we are still living the pandemic, it is important to consider eye symptoms or conjunctivitis as a potential diagnosis for Covid-19.

Its incidence can occur up to hours before the onset of the main symptoms of the disease. In this case, it is better to refer you to the tests / exams, in order to have the most accurate diagnosis.

We also warn that all ophthalmology professionals, redouble their care, as they are at risk of becoming infected due to constant contact with patients who have ocular symptoms.
